How to calculate poverty

An effort to revise the official measure of poverty will soon be launched in Congress, with a goal of getting legislation passed next year.

The official measure of poverty in 2007, announced last month by the Census Bureau, is 12.5 percent of the population, unchanged from what it was in 2006.
