Austrian right-wing leader Joerg Haider dead in car crash

VIENNA, Austria - Joerg Haider, who turned his right-wing party into a powerful force in Austrian politics with a mix of in-your-face attacks on rivals and provocative praise of the Nazi era, died Saturday when his car flipped over in a road crash. He was 58.

Haider was the Austrian politician best known outside the country, yet never held a post in Austria’s national government. He was the governor of the southern province of Carinthia.
