‘Lies’ exposed as typical spy fare
A mash-up of “The Departed” and “Syriana,” “Body of Lies” features Leonardo DiCaprio, not undercover in a South Boston underworld, but undercover in the Middle Eastern powderkegs of Iraq, Jordan and Syria as a CIA operative tracking an Osama bin Laden-like terrorist mastermind (Alon Abutbul).
DiCaprio’s superior in this Morocco-shot film is not Martin Sheen’s paternal Boston policeman, but Langley-based Ed Hoffman (a Sheen-ishly portly Russell Crowe, speaking in a good ol’ boy accent). Crowe’s Hoffman is a family man and Machiavellian schemer capable of tripping up his own agent. Dicaprio’s Roger Ferris, for his part, is unafraid to make end runs of his own.
