BB&N FOOTBALL PLAYER INJURED
Posted by Danny Ventura at 6:50 pm

A BB&N football player was seriously injured during a scrimmage with Wayland High School last evening. He was airlifted to Boston Medical Center where he underwent surgery last evening and is currently in intensive care.
Citing confidentiality, school officials refused to divulge the identity of the player
“According to the coaches, prior to the collapse, there didn’t seem to be any obvious cause as he hadn’t been involved in an impact collision as far as anyone could see,” said BB&N spokesperson Joe Clifford. “He returns to the huddle where he was wobbly and collapsed. Training and medical staff came out to the field quickly, did an evaluation and determined that he needed medical attention and a helicopter came and took him to Boston Medical Center.”
As soon as the school releases more information, we will post it.

TIME CHANGE
Posted by Danny Ventura at 11:35 am

The Tri-County/Shawsheen game, originally scheduled for 6 p.m. tomorrow has been moved up to 1 p.m. because of the weather. The game will still be played at Franklin High School.

A correction in our players to watch section. In today’s paper, we listed West Bridgewater offensive lineman Michael Courtemanche as being from Nantucket (a crime punishable by flogging in WB circles).

THURSDAY PICKORAMA
Posted by Danny Ventura at 3:19 pm

Once again, we’ll attempt to predict the high school season on a weekly basis. Here’s a look at the 10 games in the first week and our prognostications.

CHELMSFORD over Bridgewater-Raynham - New-look Lions get same old results.
Xaverian over DUXBURY - Should be one of the best nonleague games of the early season.
EVERETT over Waltham - Crimson Tide continues their mastery over the Hawks.
WALPOLE over Framingham - Too much Izzo for the Flyers.
LAWRENCE over Malden - Lancers are getting better.
NEWBURYPORT over Triton - Clippers take first step toward erasing bitter taste from last Thanksgiving Day’s loss to Amesbury.
ST. JOHN’S PREP over Masconomet - Size advantage in the trenches will spell the difference.
BROCKTON over Dracut - Just have a feeling the Boxers are a little too athletic.
Natick over Newton North - Neutral field won’t make a difference here as Natick is just too good.
PENTUCKET over North Reading - Sachems are very tough to beat at home.

Here’s the way our friends at calpreps view the same 10 games. Please visit their website at calpreps.com

NO THREE-PEAT FOR SARKIS
Posted by Danny Ventura at 7:29 pm

Tony Sarkis loves wrestling, loves coaching the Greater Lawrence wrestling team.
But there was one thing which he preferred over wrestling - his family.
Citing time constraints, Sarkis recently stepped down after leading the Reggies to a pair of Division 2 state team titles. Sarkis will remain as head coach of the football tean, the defending Division 3A Super Bowl champions.
My son (Jamil) is 10 years old and it’s not far for my wife and child to be away for that long a period of time,” said Sarkis. “Maybe someday I might return to wrestling, but for now, it’s better for me to stay with the football.”

Danny Ventura has been the Herald's authority on high school sports for 15 years. In addition to his Sweet 16 football rankings, No Holds Barred wrestling column and unrivaled coverage of high school sports in Eastern Mass., Ventura has covered the Patriots, Red Sox, Celtics and college sports for the Herald.

You might not recognize him without the famous red winter coat, but Jim Clark joined the Herald in 1998 and has been the high school sports editor and author of "In the Slot" since 2000. He grew up following the Big Bad Bruins of the late 1970s and is a graduate of Oakmont Regional (Ashburnham) and UMass. It's probably not a coincidence that both schools waited until three years after his departure to start up their hockey programs.
