Artist Statement: Ballinglen Paintings
The Ballinglen Series is inspired by travels in Ireland and a residency at the Ballinglen Arts Foundation, Ballycastle, County Mayo, Ireland. Upon returning to the U.S. with a suitcase full of works on paper, I began a series of large oil paintings entitled “Ceide Field“. Measuring up to 60 inches and just off-square, the paintings emphasize the Irish landscape through abstract spacial loops and repeated markmaking. Influenced by the peat bogs of the Ceide Fields, coastal rock formations in County Sligo, The Slieves League cliffs of County Donegal, and the landscape of the Burren, County Claire, this work continues my exploration of the daily ritual of place, realized in paint with dramatic lines, gesture, and color.

“The Céide Fields in Ballycastle, County Mayo are the oldest known field systems in the world, over five and a half millennia old. It is a unique Neolithic landscape of world importance, which has changed our perception of our Stone Age ancestors. The remains of stone field walls, houses and megalithic tombs are preserved beneath a blanket of peat over several square miles.”

“The Burren lies south of Galway in County Clare, Ireland. The name Burren is from the Irish - bhoireann meaning a stony place. Its formation has lain unspoiled since the ice-age and is composed of karstic limestone, the largest area of such in western Europe.”

Opening reception: Friday, September 5th from 5 to 7 pm

Fort Point artist and resident Steve Hollinger shows off his new work at the Chase Gallery.
His sculptures are great! If you are on Newbury street in the next month, you should check them out!

In Steve’s own words…. What’s left is all that is left when all else is gone.

The scattered remains of a woman’s house wash out to sea. Trees are slendered by winter winds, each leaf torn away and stripped to the vein. As pulp erodes, tender strands and sinews are revealed.

These are the curious threads that tell stories of What’s Left.

Samson Projects announces an exhibition of paintings by Katherine Bradford.

The work handles the classic unknown cosmic. That perpetual moment when thoughts get louder and mostly clearer.
“I paint invented scenes that have a dreamy, visionary quality. I want to capture the spirit of a quest, of community and, conversely, of quiet isolation.”

Perhaps more influenced by other paintings than by life itself? Colorful traveling and narrative wont/want with a penchant for contrast. Historically disjunct and slightly unexpected is fine. Groupings rescuing hopeful imagery and heightened moments of emotion.

The open air, land, ocean and corner as an optimistic space; A womb mode.

Katherine Bradford was born in New York, NY in 1942. She received a BA from Bryn Mawr College (Bryn Mawr, PA) and an MFA State University of New York (Purchase, NY). Bradford maintains studios in Brooklyn, NY and Brunswick, ME. Her work is in the collections of the Smith College Museum (Wellesley, MA), the Brooklyn Museum (Brooklyn, NY) and the Metropolitan Museum of Art (NY, NY). She currently has a solo exhibition at the University of Maine Museum (Bangor, ME) until October 1, 2008. Her work has most recently been included in exhibitions at the Brattleboro Museum of Art (Brattleboro, VT) and the P.S.1/MoMa Contemporary Art Center (Queens, NY). Bradford will be resident faculty at the Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture next summer (2009).

Summer Hours: Monday to Friday 9 AM – 9 PM
Saturday 10 AM - 6 PM
Closed Sunday.

The New England School of Art & Design at Suffolk University is
pleased to present “Nascent.” The five artists in this exhibit are
engaged in an examination of perceptions of reality and give their own
interpretations of personally influential events and ideas.
Thematically, the works in this exhibit are tied together by each
artists own manipulations of reality, life forms re-imagined, new
landscapes and histories envisioned.

“Nascent” features the work of recent graduates of Boston area art
schools. James Manning, curator of the exhibit states, “As a long time
supporter of student and emerging artists, I believe it is especially
important to support and encourage artists as they make the leap from
student to life as a professional artist. Life as a student can be an
isolating experience working within the same group for several years.
Shows such as this one are an important step as it gives these artists
a chance to show the very best of their student output to a new
audience of peers that would have not have had the opportunity to see
this work otherwise. It also allows fresh feedback as they continue on
with new work.”

Mike Farley (2008, BFA, New England School of Art & Design at Suffolk
University) Farley explores how separate natural elements can be
combined to create new life forms.  His work is informed by the
natural world, organic structures, and biology.

Cathleen Faubert, (2008, MFA, Museum School/Tufts University) Faubert
focuses on the intersection of hedonism, escapism, excess, the uncanny
and the carnivalesque. In her photographs she is seen floating above
and crashing into mounds of cotton candy.

Georgie Friedman, (2008, MFA, Museum School/Tufts University) Friedman
creates an idealized, meditative environment by seamlessly integrating
separate sky and water elements in her projected video installation.

Pete Froslie (2008, MFA, Massachusetts College of Art & Design) In his
work, Froslie explores diverse tangents, from alchemy to alternate
histories and questions our common perceptions.  The life of John
Wilks Booth is re-imaged by his interactive, multimedia installation
presented in Nascent.

Lizzy Martinez (2008 MFA, Boston University) Martinez is a painter who
has also extensively studied the anatomy of cadavers. In her work she
is quite literally looking at her own ‘inner workings’ while creating
a complicated personal mythology.

The New England School of Art & Design at Suffolk University is
located near the Arlington Green Line T stop across from the Park
Plaza Hotel
.
After 7PM please enter through the lobby at 10 St. James Street.

Surface
Posted by Mike Hammecker at 3:52 pm

Hello readers,

In this first blog post I thought I’d shamelessly plug a group show that I’m a part of.
The show is called Surface and it is currently running at the FPAC Gallery in Fort Point.
It features the work of Sylvie Agudelo, Jane Deutsch, Mike Hammecker and Ron MacGeorge
The works all vary in texture and subject matter, from the slick mounted photographs of Sylvie Agudelo, to the highly textured abstract pieces of Jane Deutsch, no surface is left unturned. The delicate paper pieces of Ron MacGeorge remind me of living organisms, while my pop-cultural Icon series leaves the subjects to stand on their own against a natural wood background.

Surface is curated by local Fort Point artists Kristen Mills and Jessica Hyatt.
The show runs June 27 – August 1, 2008
Opening Reception: July 11, 5:30 – 8pm
